Ever wondered what it’s like to be part of an ocean conservation expedition? At DWP CARES, our field missions are not only about restoring marine ecosystems, they’re about building a global community of changemakers dedicated to protecting our oceans. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be on the frontlines of marine restoration.
Meet the Team

Everything is connected. Trash tossed on the street can easily end up in storm drains and rivers that feed into the sea. Chemicals from fertilizers or household cleaners can leach into the water supply, harming marine life. That’s why ocean conservation must begin with personal responsibility.
A Day in the Life on the Water
A typical day starts at sunrise with a team briefing. Divers suit up and prepare equipment while surface teams coordinate logistics. Once underwater, divers plant coral fragments, remove invasive species, or conduct reef health assessments. The work is meticulous and physically demanding, but incredibly rewarding.
Afternoons are spent analyzing data, preparing reports, and engaging with the local community. Some days include beach cleanups, school visits, or policy advocacy sessions.
What We Measure and Why
We use scientific tools to monitor water quality, coral growth, biodiversity, and reef resilience. This data helps us refine our techniques and track progress over time. It also provides valuable insights for policy makers and conservation partners.
Success Stories from the Field
In Ghana, a recent expedition led to the successful transplantation of over 1,500 coral fragments. In Belize, our team helped implement community-led marine protected areas. These efforts don’t just benefit marine life, they empower communities, create jobs, and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.
